Take action on asbestos for Action Mesothelioma Day
Support Action Mesothelioma Day, Friday 3 July, to raise awareness about mesothelioma and the dangers of asbestos.
Mesothelioma is a cancer that develops in the lining of the body’s organs – most commonly the lungs, though it can also affect the lining of the abdomen. It is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos.
Any building built or refurbished before 2000 could contain asbestos. If asbestos-containing materials are damaged, fibres are released into the air and are harmful if inhaled.
The risk of asbestos being present and/or disturbed should be assessed before any building, maintenance and repair work starts.
For non-domestic properties, it’s a legal requirement to actively manage and monitor asbestos. You’ll need to find out where it is, assess the condition and level of risk and make an asbestos management plan that’s routinely reviewed.
Hear from Martin, a carpenter, who was diagnosed with terminal mesothelioma:
Symptoms of mesothelioma can include:
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- A cough that does not go away
- Difficulty swallowing
- A hoarse voice
- High temperature or heavy night sweats
- Fatigue
- Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite
- Curved nails over rounded fingertips (clubbing)
These symptoms can take many years to develop after initial exposure. If you or someone you know is experiencing any of these, encourage them to speak to their GP.
