Webinar: Asbestos & You in partnership with IOSH
Asbestos didn’t disappear when it was banned in the UK and remains in many buildings and homes today.
This 1-hour webinar will provide an overview of the Asbestos and You campaign and discuss the risks that continue to be associated with asbestos for tradespeople and how to avoid exposure.
Hosted in partnership with the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), speakers include:
- Louise Hosking, IOSH’s Immediate Past President as chair.
- Archie Mitchell, HSE Head of Asbestos Unit for Building Safety & Construction Division.
- Liam Bradley from Bauder Ltd who shares his personal experience of living with pleural mesothelioma, a cancer of the lung lining caused by asbestos exposure.
- Nathanael Challacombe of the IOSH Construction Group.
“I was on a project this morning at work and it was a really old building, it was absolutely riddled…alarm bells ringing everywhere. I just didn’t even bother going in. I get laughed at a lot for that but they don’t realise my story. I was only 30 when I was diagnosed and I’m really lucky because my my diagnosis came from from an accident from falling off three-story building where I had an operation and that’s where they where they found it.”
Every tradesperson is likely to undertake work in a building that contains asbestos at some point. Even small jobs like drilling a hole can expose you to the danger.
If your work is likely to disturb asbestos, you must take action to ensure that you and others are are not exposed to asbestos fibres.
“It’s not just about the small size of asbestos fibres, it is where it hides in the walls, roofs, insulation, floorings, flues, pipes.
There are estimates that there may be over 3,000 different known asbestos containing products and that’s just a conservative figure.”
