Talk to people both individually and as a team. Talking about mental health and stress at work can feel awkward and something you’d rather put off, but small steps can make a huge difference. Talking about these things can make it easier for people to be open and honest.
Starting the conversation is an important first step towards creating a healthy, happy workplace. To help here are a few tools:
- Talking Toolkit which takes you through a series of factors that can affect stress levels within the business;
- Return to work tool which can be part of an individual risk assessment;
- HSE App, which provides guidance on tackling work-related stress direct to your mobile device; or
- A series of example risk assessments that can form the basis of both the conversations and your risk assessment.
By talking and listening to your workers you’ll be able to assess whether your business has a risk to workers due to work-related stress or mental health, where those risks are, identify actions to prevent or tackle issues and comply with the law.
